In 2008 I had a meeting with the UK CAA about the implementation of ICAO’s Language Proficiency Requirements. At this meeting I suggested that, as well as focusing on non-native English speakers improving their Aviation English, native English speaking aviators too could improve their communication skills. This idea was met with ‘polite indifference’. Today, 14 years later, I believe we need to revisit the idea. Communication is a shared responsibility. Native English speakers have a critical role to play too.
