This is an interesting exchange between an Etihad pilot and a controller at New
York’s JFK airport.
The pilot appears to have a level of English which easily meets the ICAO Language
Proficiency Requirements.
The communication breakdown seems to be triggered by the controller’s question
“What taxiway do you enter the ramp?”. The pilot understands this to mean “What
taxiway are you using to enter the ramp (at this time)” while the controller means
“What taxiway have you been assigned to enter the ramp? (in the future)”
The controller lacked the empathy and skills to manage the misunderstanding.
